Amalfi is a town of Roman and it was the first Italian Marine Republic.
After the fall of the Roman empire, it was the first city to re-establish trade between the East and West, transforming and introducing exotic products such as carpets, coffee, paper and spice into Italy.
It even had its own currency: the tari.

It was the patria homeland of Flavio Gioia, who invented the compass and provided navigators with the famous book on the law of the sea called "Tabula de Amalfa".
It lost its independence to the Normans, who dominated the whole of South Italy.
Under the Angioini to start with and then the Aragonesi it then lost its trade power, before re-establishing it at the beginning of the century when it became one of the most important sea-side resorts on the Amalfi Coast.

The city is not only important for its history but it is also about legend, art, religious tradition and health.
